Scaling the Wall to support Prospects
This is the story of a sister, a mum, and a friend that took not one, but two different challenges to raise funds for Prospects in 2009. The first was a very successful comedy show at The Comedy Store in London with headline acts such as Russell Howard and Paul Tonkinson. Their second challenge was a really testing, but exciting, trek to the Great Wall of China.
Rebecca (Brenda's daughter, Hannah's sister) is supported by Prospects and lives in Bournemouth. Hannah says,
“Prospects have looked after my sister Rebecca for over 10 years, so we wanted to give something back. They offer Rebecca so much care and support, and our family has felt very supported too. We wanted to raise as much money as possible, which is why we also organised a comedy night. We paid for the treks ourselves so that the money donated would go directly to Prospects. It was great to be able to give something back to a charity which has done so much for us as a family.
After the successful charity comedy night for Prospects Mum, Jenny and I jetted off to Beijing, China on the 9 October to trek the Great Wall for Prospects. The trek took 9 days altogether, and we stayed in different hostels along the Wall – some much more basic than others! The views along the Wall were spectacular and ever-changing. We were often up high above the ground, so views of the surrounding mountains were never ending, and we were even lucky enough to watch the sun set over the Wall. We also met some fantastic people along the way, all raising money for different charities and for their own personal reasons. Our fellow trekkers all had inspirational stories to tell on the walk, but were also great fun to share the evenings with over a beer or two!
Despite the breathtaking scenery and the friends we made, we also found the trek very challenging. Trekking non-stop for 9 days up and down stairs is extremely tiring, but still more challenging was the sheer drops either side, and knowing that your safety is in your own hands. At times there was nothing between you and a sheer drop either side. Some of the trekkers didn’t know they suffered from vertigo until they came on the trek!
We overcame a lot of personal fears on this trek, and felt extremely proud to have completed it together. We have raised almost £5000 now for Prospects, and we would like to thank everyone you supported us on our adventure!"
