Rebuilding a school for children with special needs in India

2010-05-India-poojaIn India, many young girls and boys with special needs live on the streets, abandoned by families who consider them a burden. With your support MUKTI can help to give these children new opportunities and hope for the future.

As well as food, shelter, clothing and medical care, Mukti provides education, love and guidance to help them develop into positive, valuable members of their communities.

Prospects has been supporting MUKTI for a number of years in areas such as leadership training, staff training, organisational development and developing strategic direction for the special needs services within MUKTI.

The current school building is inadequate for effective teaching and support of the students and children. There is no flexibility in the use of the room and when all are present it does not allow for effective group activities. The building is run down and requires significant investment or re-provision.

Due to the current facilities, it is very difficult to recruit teachers and other staff, therefore the staffing levels are not adequate for the number of students and children. As a result of this, programmes are limited. The current teacher does an excellent job given the limited resources available to her but she is in desperate need of support in order to continue this vital work.

Due to there being only one classroom, and with it effectively being an ‘all age school’, with the youngest being 4 and the oldest 46, there is a clash between the requirements of children and those appropriate for adults.

Many children with special needs are currently turned away from MUKTI because the resources are not available at the present time. This means that a valuable income stream is being lost and as a result some local children are not receiving and education, whilst others are.

MUKTI supports any child in significant need regardless of their religious or cultural background and because of this close alignment with our values and ethos, we have committed to support MUKTI in delivering this rebuild.

Prospects are working in partnership with MUKTI to raise a capital sum of £48,000 to provide a new school building. If you can contribute, please get in touch with us via e-mail.

Here is a plan of the proposed building.
