Prospects - Working with Adults with Learning Disabilities

The Story of Alex

Little AlexCasa Silvia in Romania is home to five children with learning disabilities who had spent their lives in institutions before coming to Casa Silvia.  These institutions are usually large and staff have difficulty feeding and caring for so many children.

Alex was cared for at Casa Silvia for nearly 3 years.  He was a very frail little boy and in October 2007 went to be with Jesus.  He was known throughout Marghita and his loss was felt deeply.  He regularly visited the local institution with Brenda, where young people live in distressing conditions with little love and care.  But they were delighted for him to visit so they could hold him and talk to him about their lives.  Although Alex could not talk back, his presence gave such comfort in their grim monotonous lives.

Alex's parents did love him very much, but could not care for him because of his profound and multiple disabilities.  They did however visit him at Casa Silvia whenever they could and were deeply grateful for the love and care he received there.  Praise God for the work of Casa Silvia and for Alex, who was such a blessing to all who cared for him.  He is deeply missed by all.

(Casa Silvia is a Christian home part-funded through donations from Prospects supporters and is run by Fundatia Crestina Elim - an evangelical Christian organisation working in Marghita, Romania.)

Brenda Jackson lives at Casa Silvia and was Alex's principal carer.  She has written a touching tribute to "A Boy dearly beloved" that is featured in a fundraising page set up IN MEMORY OF ALEX

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving; present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4: 4-7

Romania-Feb08-Pamela-SuminteCasa Silvia would like to give other children the opportunity to grow and develop in a loving Christian family.  Suminte, a 3 year old, lies in a hospital ward.  Having had a childhood illness which has resulted in brain damage and physical difficulties, her parents decided they could not care for her adequately at home.  Her only break from the monotony from lying in a cot is when a nurse gives her a bottle.  A beautiful little girl with so much to give who needs a home.  Suminte is one of many children who are disabled and are left in hospitals.

Each child costs £200 a month to be loved and looked after in a Christian home so they can grow to their full potential.  Would you consider giving regularly to Casa Silvia?
