What are Makaton Training Days?
This training day has been developed as a partnership between two charities - The Makaton Charity and Prospects. The training day will enable people to take part more fully in their daily lives. It will also help people to share in worship and prayer and learn about Jesus.
The training is for everyone interested in learning to sign to worship God. People with learning disabilities, those involved with Prospects groups, carers, helpers, friends and family and church members of all ages are welcome.
Places on the training day are limited so please book early to avoid the possibility of disappointment.
The Aims are to
Enhance communication skills
Learn vocabulary which can be used in daily living
Learn specialised vocabulary of Christian signs and symbols
Create opportunities for worship and teaching using signs and symbols.
The training day is led by a registered Makaton Tutor.
Each participant receives a Training Day Handbook and a Certificate of Attendance.
The training day is interactive with plenty of opportunity to use signs and symbols.
Topics covered include:
Learning skills for communication
Principles of signing
Use of symbols
Ways to encourage group participation
Description of the work of the two charities: Prospects and The Makaton Charity.
Timing
Training days usually take place on a Saturday. Registration from 9.30am, Training Day, 10.00am£3.30pm.
Resource Materials
There will be some Prospects resource materials available for sale, and an opportunity to see some of the Makaton resources together with the current list and prices available from Makaton.
The Cost
There is a charge of £12 if you come as an individual, reduced to £10 for each person if two people book together, one person with a learning disability and one person accompanying who is either a leader/helper of a Prospects Ministry group or a parent/friend/carer.
This charge includes the Training Day handbook, the day£s training, administrative costs and The Makaton Charity licence to use their material, tutor£s travel and materials for activities.
Catering
Drinks are provided at regular intervals throughout the day, including lunchtime. However delegates will need to bring their own packed lunch with them.
