Lena Roberts, Support Worker in Shrewsbury
I have worked at York House for over 11 years now. I joined the charity back in 1996 as a Level 1 Support Worker for 20 hours each week, which fitted in well with family life. Over the years my hours have gradually increased, as has my role and my responsibilities at York House.
The Manager has always been very supportive and encouraged me to pursue training and courses which help me to fulfill my role.
Over the years I have received training in first aid, moving and handling, fire training and health and safety. The Health and Safety training I have taken to a higher level and spent a year studying at the local college where I gained a certificate in Advanced Health and Safety from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. Today I am the Health and Safety representative at York House and work with the Fire Office and the Service Manager to monitor a safe living and working environment for those who live and work here. There are many legal implications regarding health and safety and this is one area of my job which I really enjoy. Last year I went on a 5 day course organized by Shropshire Partners in Care which trained me to train others with whom I work in moving and handling techniques.
Working in a Christian environment brings to me a greater unity and understanding of faith. I am constantly reminded that compassion and humility are needed daily in all that we do both as Christians and employees of Prospects. I feel that God’s love reaches out to all and knows no boundaries, and that Prospects tries to reach out to the people it supports and break down the barriers which society places on them.
